An external conflict basically means the struggle between two people or an argument. This is opposed to internal conflict, which is a struggle with yourself or a character's internal battle (say with his conscience, or with guilt, etc.).

External conflict can be as big as a war, or as small as a disagreement. Here are some examples:

• A man fighting with his wife over who is going to go pick up food.
• Two people being attacked by a bear.
• A motorcyclist in an argument with a driver who claims that the motorcycle could not be seen.
• The conflict between Macbeth and Macduff.

Internal conflict is when you are having an argument within yourself. Here are some examples:

• You can't decide whether to buy the shoes or the jacket.
• You really want to do something that violates your moral code.
• You want to apologize, but are worried about looking weak or being mocked.
• You should be concentrating on work, but you are tired and your mind is wandering.
