Both spellings can be correct. We chose "eal" because of my husbands ancestry.

There are accepted ways of spelling certain names and these usually stay the same over time.

Michael is the English form, pronounced like my kill. Mícheál, is the Irish language form and is pronounced like me hall. The little line over the i and the a is known as a fada and it changes the pronunciation of those letters. People using that variation of the spelling for English often leave out the fadas, as in the case of your question.
