Assuming that you are not an atheist, i would have to say that the first author was God! True, but the question asks who wrote the first book, not who created the world. The Bible, Torah, and Qu'ran are both collections of writings by many different people trying to put down things that they felt God was telling them - the oldest manuscripts date from anywhere from 1446 BC to 537 BC (these are both guesses as to the dates that the Israelites were captives in Egypt, which is around the time that Moses wrote the Ten Commandments."

The Chinese were the first people to begin printing literature - they used blocks of wood and rice paper.

Nobody knows who wrote the very first book, but here are some examples of very old books that we know about:

  • Japanese "Million Pagoda Charms" - although not actually books as you think about them, these good luck charms are actually the oldest known examples of printing! They have publication dates between 718 and 764 AD!
  • The "Diamond Sutra" scroll ("Jin gang ban ruo bo luo mi jing") - this is the first book scientists have discovered which actually had a publication date. It was published on the year 868. However, books had been printed in China for at least 150 years before this!
  • The "Dharani Sutra" scroll )"Mugujonggwang taedaranigyong") - this might be the earliest printed document in the world. It is a series of Chinese woodblock printings, and was put into print by a monk named Mit'san in the year 704!
