What does he mean when he says you're the best?

A guy calls a girl a 'special friend' when there's an additional element to just platonic friendship ie a sexual interest (this could already be present or he hopes it will happen in the future) but he does not consider it to be dating, the girl to be his girlfriend or that they are in a relationship (No committment).

In most cases, guys use this term to make a woman feel special so that she sticks around while he strings her along and uses her for his own selfish purposes. When a man doesn't want to commit to any one woman, he splits his needs viz sexual, friendship, wife material etc. He has women he uses for sex, for friendship (hang out with), to emulate a home-life (he will have this woman cook & care for him) and depending on his station in life and further needs he may have others he will like to be seen with, especially if she is pretty (arm candy) and smart ones he would probably introduce to his professional/work circle. He could use one woman for a combination of the above, BUT DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF THINKING THAT JUST BECAUSE HE'S WITH YOU AND NEEDS YOU THAT HE RESPECTS AND CARES FOR YOU!!

If you are getting less out of the 'friendship' than what makes you happy, then you are being used!

To come out on top, you need to figure out what he wants from you (they could all be intangible things) and unless you start getting what you want from him, cut him of! Let somebody else be his doormat; kick the selfish user to the curb!

maybe he likes dudes b/c they say if a guys best friend is a girl then he's.... not straight...... If it's a random guy who just walks up to you and says you're his friend, it means he's just being stupid. If an aquataince that you know well says your his friend, then you probally are.

Special friend means that aside from normal friendship there is another element.

In a dating context, it usually means that there is also sexual interest. However the persona doesn't (yet) consider you a boy/girlfriend, dating etc.
