Bake him cookies.

Buy him a dog tag that has the date when you guys met.

If he likes sports then buy him something that has to do with his favorite team.
Buy him new shoes or shirt or hoodie/jacket.

The reason I looked up the question is that I ordered something thoughtful for my boyfriend whose birthday is in two weeks. Then, because it is something he really wanted, he one day said "I think I shall buy this" forcing me to intervene with "No, you won't because it's on it's way". Scored big on the great girlfriend scale, but now need something else.
Sigh.
Generally, what I do is listen to everything he says he wants, filter out the impossible, the crap, and the stuff that will make my life hell and get what remains. That way you're being thoughtful to both of you.
