In this Moro legend, Bantugan, nephew of the earthquake and thunder, seeks to win the hand in marriage of the daughter of the Sultan of the Island, and sends his son Balatama as an envoy to the court. When the Sultan and his courtiers demand a number of outlandish and lavish gifts as prerequisites for the wedding, Balatama brings storms and quakes upon the realm until the Sultan consents. After Balatama returns to Bantugan to tell him the news, a Spanish general arrives at the Sultan's city and threatens to destroy it unless the Sultan gives him the princess for his bride. The Sultan declares that Bantugan and the Spaniard must make war upon each other to determine who shall win his daughter's hand. The battle between their armies proves catastrophic. To save innocent lives, the Sultan and Bantugan conspire to tell the Spaniard that the fighting must stop and that the princess will marry neither man. Both suitors leave, but Bantugan soon returns to the city, marries the princess, and brings her to his home in the Rio Grande valley. Yet the Spaniard also returns to the city, aiming to take the princess by force. Upon learning of Bantugan's deed, he destroys the city and decides to destroy Bantugan and his people as well. Bantugan's warships and the Spanish fleet wage another terrible battle on the Rio Grande. Finally, Bantugan's warship sinks near the mouth of the great river, dragging hundreds of Spanish ships in its wake. When Bantugan's wife sees this, she rallies their remaining warriors to avenge Bantugan's death, but they, too, all drown. An island filled with bongo palms emerges from the spot where Bantugan's warship sank, while the Timaco mountain rises where the princess fell. It is said that Bantugan and the princess, along with their warriors and handmaidens, live in these places to this very day.
