Since Qin Shihuangdi ruled cruelly as a tyrant, scholars criticized him and said that the "old ways" were better. This angered Qin and he ordered the scholars to be executed and all of their books to be burned (except for the ones about medication, family, fortune telling and the Qin dynasty). 460 scholars tried to hide the books but they were caught and thrown into pits to be buried alive.
