It's necessary for animals to have three main basic drives: to eat and to protect or defend themselves (to stay alive) and to mate (to reproduce).

Most animals mate only in order to reproduce, but dolphins are unusual in that they're known also to mate for pleasure rather than simply for reproductive purposes.

How our marine scientist discovered that I can't say, but no doubt it took a great deal of dedicated study. Their finding is just one of many which has added to the mystique of dolphins as being more human-like, psychologically at least, than most other mammals.
