many crabs would eat herrings.

crabs, being widely an omnivorous scavenger, eat just about anything that falls to the sea floor. Some crabs are predators and hunt small fish, which would include herrings. Of course, there are some crabs which are herbivores, which would stay away from them.

I wouldn't suggest feeding pickled or preserved herring to pet crabs though, the chemicals used in the preservation would probably kill them.
