Hermit crabs will sometimes come out of their shells under their own free will. However, if you pick up the crab'ss shell and it falls out easily, it is dead. When still alive, the crab will hold onto the inside of the shell.
Yes!
Hermit crabs use their shells for protection so it is very dangerous for a hermit crab to be out of a shell but they will leave to moult or find a larger / better shaped shell. The sheel is merely for protection but their lives do not completely depend on it.
Usually, but not always. I depends on what killed it. For example, a crab that dies from over heating will leave it's shell first in an effort to "cool down". Also, a crab without an available will shell will eventually die since it's gills can't be kept moist.
No, they just... die :( But if conditions or mites cause them to die they might crawl out of their shell before, but they usually dont.
To tell if they are dead, smell (yes i said smell) the tank, and if it smells like dead fish then a hermie has died. :(
no but it will be when you wont put that thing back on its shell using your own bare hands
If you smell dead fish, and you didnt put sea food in the tank than yes.
Another way you can tell if a hermit crab if dead is by the claw of the hermit crab to be limp.
It may die but sometimes it doesn't. It dies because without it's claw it can't pick up its food so it'll starve to death , but also with it's claw coming off is a sign of stress.
yes
Yes it can but it depends what kind of shell. The shell must be like a conch shell, but not the kind for snails. There would be not enough room for the crab to squeeze his body in. You need a shell with an opening a little bit bigger than the shell opening it already has on if you want it to change into the new shell. But most the time they do not change shells (I have had one for over a year and it still hasn't). I know you probably want it to change into the pretty new shell you bought or found but do not try to manually do it for the crab.
yes. Crabs can walk backwards and sideways
Yes. Whole eggs can carry salmonella, either in or on the egg. Shell eggs are normally cleaned and sanitized to reduce the contamination on the shell. The incidence of bacteria inside the eggs can be reduced by maintaining healthy flocks.
1st Shell: 2 2nd Shell: 8 3rd Shell: 8
A hermit crab grows out of it's shell and looks for a new discarded snail's shell. Snails produce the shells and once the snails die the shells become homes for hermit crabs. Hermit crabs molt their exoskeleton Large Jumbo crabs molt about once a month and smaller crabs molt a few times a month. They collect water and food into their shell and burrow deep into the sand where they shed their old skeleton and eat it. They eat their old skeleton to regain nutrients that they lost during the molting process. If a hermit crab looses it's legs (which doesn't usually happen during the molting process) they will regenerate.
No a Turttles shell is it's back and spine.
the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth
It digs a hole not to deep only big enough to fit in there; and if it is rains it will just stay there, not move and it will put his head inside the shell. and if it is hot it will stay there in the whole because the dirt is kind of cool and the turtle will chill.
My 2 hermies love the crust off of whole wheat bread!

It is actually best to give them natural shells. While painted shells may seem fun and attractive to you, even paint that is labeled "non toxic" has not been tested for safety with hermit crabs. Hermit crabs tend to nibble on most everything in their environment. Imagine if you ate a whole bowl full of paint chips. Whether it was "non toxic" or not, it would probably still make you sick. Because hermit crabs eat such small amounts, a few nibbles of a paint chip would be like eating a bowl of paint chips for you. Nail polish is definitely unsafe for them, and acrylic paint isn't good either. If you own a hermit crab with a painted shell, offer him several different natural shells (which are much more beautiful) so he can move out. Once he does (and he was forced into that painted shell to begin with, they don't paint shells with crabs in them), remove the shell and don't let him have it back. You will likely find that the paint has already been chipping off.
