Hens will lay eggs around 5-6 months of age depending on the breed. If you want them fertilized you will need a rooster, although having a rooster is not essential for having eggs (they sure are entertaining though!).

Some breeds are slow to mature and will not start to lay before 7 to 9 months.

It really does depend on the breed of Chicken. The most common breed comercials can lay from between 5-7 months old and in some cases 4 months old, if there ready. Laying Breeds tend to lay ealier as they are LAYING breeds, breed for early laying age and better amount of overall egg production. The meat breeds how ever can take longer. You can tell if there going to lay soon if their wattles and combs are a bright red colour. Just a helpful hint.

it depend on the type of chicken mine started within 5-6 months

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hens start laying as the days begin to lengthen at the end of winter. The length of day as measured in the brain causes the hormones that result in the eggs being produced. Commercial farmers use this to ensure that barn raised chickens lay all year by controlling the artificial lighting in the barns.

If you are asking at what age do they lay eggs then you can expect the first eggs to be laid by a pullet at about 5 months old. Different breeds mature at different times so some may start earlier and others may go as much as 7 months before the first egg.

If you are asking what time of day, a hen usually produces an egg every 24 hours and can lay that egg anytime. Most will not lay at night as they roost then, but some do. A small flock usually gets into a rhythm and will "copy" the dominant hen, seeking a nesting box soon after she announces her egg has arrived ( The squawking you hear when an egg is laid)

Most breeds of chicken will start to lay eggs between 16 and 20 weeks old. They will continue to lay up to 2 or 3 years with some breaks during moulting. It is however, dependant on the breed of hen you have as some hens can be as old as 28 weeks old before laying that first egg.
