Most fish foods contain fish meal as a protein source. Many fish in the wild eat small insects or small fish as their protein source, so it mimics most closely the protein they would get in the wild.
If your aquarium is producing a fishy type smell it could be time for a water change. Never remove more than half and remove half only in very needed situations, average about 1/4 the water. Remember to de-chlorinate, buff, etc. Regular small water changes are greatly more beneficial than seldom large ones. Could also be your filter pads need to be changed, a smell from your tank could be a sign your carbon in filter is running low or has been depleted. Never do a water change and filter cleaning at same time as this may remove too much beneficial bacteria from your aquarium leading to a tank crash and possibly the death of the inhabitants.

The water that they swim in is very dirty. Hazardous water may contain dangerous chemicals and other waste products. It has a lot of germs and bacteria. They also swim in their own pee and poop. All of the nasty odor builds up on the fish. It gets trapped inside of their fins and scales. People often say that, "Fish doesn't smell when it's fresh." That is not true, this is the major factored caused by the condition of the water that they are living and swimming in. The fish will start to smell bad if they are left out of the water for more than 12 hours. This is because the bacteria and odor on the fish is decaying which will create an unpleasant smell on the fish. Fishes caught in canals, swamps, reservoirs and sloughs often smell bad. Fishes caught in rivers, lakes and oceans shouldn't smell or smell bad unless if they swam or were transferred from the following locations above. If you plan to cook and eat the fish, make sure you wash and clean the fish good!
