Differences between Holmes and Watson

Sherlock Holmes, though portrayed as very brilliant, has himself said that if anyone knew his process of thought they would realize that he is as normal as any other man. Watson is intelligent too, but is most of the time baffled by Holmes' conclusions. Sherlock also has a seven-percent cocaine addiction (by injection, a foul and painful process), and Dr. Watson smokes a regular pipe and cigar on occasion.

You may not know it, but Sherlock Holmes is also quite unhygienic and has many strange habits. For example, in one of the novels, Watson states that Holmes has tobacco plugs for his pipes hidden in the toes of his slippers, and other various places, like the mantel.

Watson gets married, while Holmes has never been married or had any interest in any woman, save Irene Adler. She is 'the only woman to ever escape Holmes. She is also always 'the woman' to Holmes; never referred to otherwise. Sherlock also practices his shooting abilities indoors, and plays the violin.

Many of these habits occur when he is deep in thought about a case, in which he is advised to never under any circumstances be disturbed by anyone. These 'spells' can go on for days at a time. There are many other differences between them, but those are the main ones.

Sherlock is smart and perfect. Watson is kindly but not as smart.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created his character Sherlock Holmes modelling him after his teacher in the Edinburgh Medical School, Dr. Joseph Bell. So this character was created out of the elements and faculties of observation, logic, deduction and diagnosis. Dr.Watson was a shadow of Doyle's past inner self from the student days, created as an unpolished rock against which the razor of Holmes' logic could be sharpened. Holmes is pictured as a very detached and reserved person whereas Watson is kind, humane, emotional and social. Watson is not at all a fool or unclever, but he certainly can not raise himself above earthly cares whereas Holmes can abandon food and rest for days if necessary, when he is engaged in a mind blowing puzzle the solving of which needs him being just a weight of nerves. Watson is straight forward and simple and just can not enter the mind of a criminal as his famous companion does. Nor can he invent ingeneous tricks like Holmes to trap adversaries.

Well, you see that Holmes is calmer than Watson in some ways, but even Watson says that Holmes could disengage his mind at will. Holmes is obviously smarter than Watson - he can tell where Watson is just by looking at his cigarette.

They are both Victorian gentlemen. They feel the same way about felony. Both are strong, good shots with a pistol, reasonably level headed, and kind to women. (Though in the last aspect Holmes does not like them and Watson does)

Unlike most portrayals of Watson, he is much more like Holmes than most people think. Holmes is, of course, extremely intelligent and very active, but, also unlike most Watson portrayals, so is Watson. After all, he was an army doctor in Afghanistan, you've got to be pretty active to be an army doctor and you've got to be pretty intelligent to be a doctor. Nobody wants an incompetent bumbling doctor. Of the two, I would say that Watson, perhaps, had the better judgment, being that Holmes took cocaine, and Watson tried to stop him. Watson did not have the powers of observation and deduction that Holmes did, but he does get a little better. 'Experts' say that as time went on, Holmes became more like Watson and Watson became more like Holmes. So, to compare, I'd say their pretty even.

Holmes and Dr. Watson were best friend. Dr. Watson always tries to be as clever as Holmes. Dr. Watson wants to help Holmes in every case even it will be a life risky case. Holmes also takes help of Watson. But in "The final problem"

Holmes does not want Dr. Watson to be involved in the case bcz Holmes that he will be killed in case and there will also be life risk of Watson. Inspite of this Watson did not leave Holmes alone Holmes. But he fails in protacting him.

This shows Holmes love towards Dr. Watson and Dr. Watson love towards Holmes.

They're good friends.

Sherlock Holmes is a master of induction, the process of breaking down information and coming up with a educated guess, he is also almost always in his own little world. (In the books Holmes is said to have great deduction skills, but deduction is basically having the answer but breaking down the happening leading up to the, in Holmes' case, murder.) Dr. Watson is very down to earth and uses more common sense.
