Here are the steps needed to play Star Wars: The Old Republic:

1. Create an account, either Free to Play or Subscriber This can be done on the SWTOR website.
2. Download/Purchase the game from the website. Downloading it is free. Purchasing it from a retail store will get you Preferred status (more freedom than just free to play.
3. Install the game.
4. Log into the game.
5. Create a character. Free to players / Preferred players should be careful here ... you only get a limited number of character slots on your account.
6. After character is created, hit the Play button.
7. There are numerous tutorials that are turned on by default. If this is you first time playing it, follow the tutorials. They are also available if you want to refresh your memory.
8. Have fun

Notes:

Free to Play and Preferred characters have a very limited number of character slots at the moment. Free To Play (FTP) have two spots and Preferred Status players have 2 (at the moment, will be 6 in the near future)

The available species are very limited in FTP and Preferred Status: Human, Cyborg, and Zabrak.

FTP players are limited to 2 action bars, Preferred are limited to 4. You can however purchase more from the Cartel Store with Cartel Coins, or on the Galactic Trade Network (GTN) if you are lucky to find one cheap enough.

FTP and Preferred status players have their credits capped. FTP is capped at 200,000 credits while Preferred are capped at 350,000 credits.

FTP and Preferred status players have their planet commendations limited. You can only have 20 from each planet.
