Haymitch loves Katniss and Peeta as he would his own children. Haymitch doesn't like either of them better. Haymitch believes Katniss is stronger then Peeta which is why he sends all the sponsor gifts to Katniss.

∙ 11y agoHaymitch, while something acting tough to Katniss and Peeta, genuinely wants to encourage them. He gives them advice and helps them with strategies.
Haymitch believes Katniss is a stronger competitor because she is very strong-willed and determined. He knows that she will find a way to endure (example- in The Hunger Games, he doesn't send her water because he knows she'll find it in the pond). However, he agrees with Katniss that Peeta is a better speaker who can persuade people well.

At first you are led to believe that Peeta asks to be coached separately because Katniss scored higher than him with the Gamemakers. Also because of the closeness of The Games. Later you suspect that another reason is because he wanted to talk strategy with Haymitch. Peeta wanted to talk to Haymitch about telling his love for Katniss. After their interviews Katniss is angry because she wasn't told, but Haymitch informs her that it was right that she not know. She needed to act surprised. She's not a good actress so this way she was genuinely surprised.
