The original idea to build the monument came from a Catholic priest in the mid 1850s, however he failed to gain the financial support. The statue as we know it today came about due to a campaign by the Catholic Circle in Rio, who held a Semana do Monumento (Monument Week) to get signatures and monetary support. Brazilian Heitor DA Silva Costa was the designer and French sculptor Paul Landowiski was the builder

What David Letterman puts on top of his Christmas tree on his Late Night Show?

It is an Empire State Building statue, a pizza, and a meatball. This is a tradition whose roots lie in the show's involvement with their neighbors. The pizza comes from their neighbor, Angelo's Pizza, the statue (I think) from Surajul and Mujibar's souvenir shop, and the meatball possibly from Hello Deli.

William Shakespeare what did Hamlet mean by the undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns?

As the soliloquy at that point is indeed speaking about death (Hamlet is contemplating suicide) it suggests that he is talking about the afterlife - from which no one has ever returned - except of course Jesus Christ. (Allegedly mind you...)
