What is & isn't "evil" is culturally subjective. For one, the Joker has no official origin story. not even the oh-so-popular Killing Joke, which isn't as detailed as the new Lovers & Madmen origin.

If he is evil, it's because he's sane. He fakes his insanity to stay cozy in Arkham instead of rotting on death row. He's an actor with a high IQ & rock-bottom morals.

If he's not evil, it's because he's insane & believes that the world is just a dream where he & Batman are the only real people. If he truly believes this, then he believes that the people he kills don't really exist. Legally, that would make him not competent enough to be responsible for his own actions.

These two characters represent polar opposites-law v disorder , good v evil, solid citizen v master criminal . This gives the story its dramatic edge and power.Imagine a different reaction from Batman- let's say he said 'whatever' and was passive towards the joker.Result= no tension or conflict or drama=no story.

In the comic 'The killing joke' the joker(before he was the joker) was going to do a robbery with some guys, they put him in 'the red hood' helmet(the red hood is a criminal batman is trying to catch). The batman turns up at their robbery and stops them, the joker panics and jumps into a river of chemicals to get away from batman, making him now the joker. Joker plans revenge against batman, because he made him the way he is, if batman hadn't turned up everything would have gone smoothly.

in the animated series hes sworn enemies and comical and stupid looking and just wants to kill him like everyone else. In The Dark Knight Joker never wanted to kill Batman. He just wanted to know who he was... and cause pain... and eventually kill him but like he said "Kill you?! HAHA! I couldn't LIVE without you!"

because the joker is insane and has nothing to do with his life, he is like a dog chasing a car he doesn't know what to do with it if he caught it so he creates crimes. batman being the super hero, it is his obligation to protect gotham. basically if there was no joker there would not be a batman.

That's home SOME see it. Morrison long ago rewrote the Joker to be "supersane." That's a combination of being half-crazy, competent, extraordinarily open-minded, & having a high IQ. How can you be half-crazy? It's when you have multiple personality & mental disorders, but are still competent. He has been proven sane in court twice, but put on a huge act & killed the judge & his lawyer in one of the cases, the other time he actually got a death sentence, but they had to set him free because he ended up being innocent of that particular set of murders. Ironically, has delivered him straight to Arkham without trial ever since.

because when he was a criminal batman was chasing him through a chemical plant. the joker then fell into a vat of acids as you know it bleached his skin white and turned him crazy. he blames batman for this so dedicates his life to killing him

The joKer does not want to kill batman because he would not have anyone to fight but his problem is that batman made him into the joker. It was an accident at a chemical plant.
