An element is a pure substance it can not be broken up into anything else.

A compound is two or more pure substances joined together chemically, such that they can not be separated physically - a new substance. However this substance can be converted chemically back into its component bits.

A mixture is two or more substances that are mixed up but not joined together, such that they can be separated physically.

There is also the a "solution" which is like a mixture but where the mixing is happening at a molecular level, it is possible to separate the components physically, but not easily.
