To find the volume of a solid you can't simply calculate, get a large tub of water in which you can completely immerse the solid. Fill the tub with water to the edge, then submerge the solid. Any water that spills over has been replaced by the solid and signifies the amount of space the solid is now taking up. Weigh the water or put it in 1l bottles. 1kg of water is 1l and a liter is a cubic decimeter. From there you can calculate the volume in any unit you want.
There is no simple method.
First of all the answer depends on the size of the solid. It is incredibly difficult to measure the volume of an irregular rock with a mass of several tons!
If the solid is small then you can measure its volume by displacement. Partly fill a graduated cylinder with a fluid (water, for example) and read off the volume from the graduation. Insert the object into the cylinder and measure the new volume. The volume of the solid is the difference in the two volumes.
Obviously, this method will not work if the solid contains parts which are soluble in the fluid.
To measure an irregular solid, we use the displacement method. This is when we immerse the object in water and see how much the water level rises (Make sure you have correct markings on your tool.)
You could find the volume of an irregular object by water displacement. You measure the initial volume of water in a beaker, then you place the object in the water. Record the final volume and subtract it from the initial, and there you have the volume of the object. :))
It is called displacement, and is done by submerging the object in a fluid and measuring the volume of fluid that the object displaced.
The pieces are then dipped in a cup full of liquid volume measure, we have been frustrated. Archimedes law.
You can measure the volume of irregular solids by using water displacment which is meausured in mililiters (mL), and that, in turn, can be converted to cubic centimeters (cm3)
Measure the volume of the water you have. Insert irregular solid. Measure the volume of the water you have now, and subtract the initial water volume from the new water volume. The difference in volumes is the volume of your irregular solid.
The unit for volume is the same, whether the shape is regular or irregular.
The volume of a solid object is measured using a mathematical equation appropriate to its geometry, provided it is of regularly geometrical form (polyhedral or circle-based). Alternatively, if it is irregular but small and can be immersed, by displacement of water.
use a ruler to measure the lenght of each side of the object
Immerse it in water and its volume is equal to the volume of water displaced
Irregular solid volume is still measured in cm3 etcTo Find the Volume of an irregular object you can,Measure out a proportional amount of water to the object you are finding the volume ofPut the object in the container of waterSee how much the water has risen byYou now have the volume!!(The difference between the new and old volumes of water is the volume
The method used to measure an irregular solid by placing it in water is called dispersion. If you note the level of the water before placing the object in and the level after, you can find the volume of the object by calculating the difference.
yes
It's simple, you just have to take a measurable recipient big enough to contain the solid, fill the recipient with a known volume of water and drop the irregular solid into the water. Then you can measure the increase of volume, which will be equivalent to the volume of your solid.
To measure what quantity of irregular solids? If its volume you are referring then you can use the volume displacement method where you need a measuring cylinder, water and possibly a displacement can.Measure a known quantity of water. Then immerse the irregular solid in this cylinder. The rise in the water level equals the volume of the irregular solid. Note that if the irregular object floats, a sinker must be used to fully immerse the irregular solid, where the volume of the sinker should be known.Hope this helps- if you need more information email me @ physicsisland@hotmail.com
yes you can use a balance to measure the volume of an irregular shaped solid.
If you submerge the object in a volumetrically-labeled beaker, the volume of water displaced (how much the water rises when the object is submerged), is the volume of the object.Either a graduated cylinder or overflow can is used to measure the volume of an irregular solid by water displacement.
You place it in water to see the volume of water it displaces. Fill a large, graduated measuring cylinder to about halfway with water (say to 50mL) Put the irregular solid in, and measure the volume it reads (solid + water). (say it reads 80mL) So the volume of the irregular solid will be: volume(solid+water) - volume(water). For example, the volume of the water was 50mL, and when the solid was added, the volume increased to 80mL. The volume of the solid would be 80mL - 50mL. So it would be 30mL.
The water displacement method is typically used to find the volume of an irregular solid. The object is submerged in a known amount of water, and the increase in water volume is measured. This increase in volume is equal to the volume of the irregular solid.
The volumes of small irregular solids are usually easily measured by measuring the volume of fluid displaced when they are immersed in a liquid. For example: You would have to put the object in a measuring glass with water in it. (~1/3 filled) Put the object in it and then get the number from the measuring glass (beaker etc. mostly beaker) and that is how you measure a irregular solid!
