A 'tin can' is actually made of steel, which is a magnetic alloy of iron.

There is sometimes a layer of tin (or zinc), electroplated onto the surface, so the name is misleading. It is more properly a 'tinned' can as it is a steel can which has been 'tinned' to stop it from corroding.

Magnets are attracted to ferrous metals, namely iron and steel, nickel, cobalt and a few other less common elements.

As cans are normally made of steel, the magnets will be attracted to them. If there is no attraction, it means that the can is made from something other than steel.

Magnets stick to cans of beans because the can is made of aluminum. Aluminum is a type of metal and magnets stick to metal.

Magnetism could be used to sort cans by metallic state or not. (Steel would be attracted to the magnet, while aluminum would not, for instance.)
