extreme traumatic stress- War neurosis- battle shock- for example- possibly civil angle such as massive trauma from witnessing horrific crime, fire or again, accident- which could involve head injuries- also such things as terrorism and political variations ( as the girl from Russia- who was always going blank when pressed on what happened in the fateful night in the Basement in Ekaterinberg! There are many causes.
There are many reasons to get amnesia, the primary reason is traumatic stress, some times old age can also lead to amnesia.

Violent shocks such as those in war, battle shock- exploding bombs up close- nerve jolting violence- automobile accidents also. most amnesia is triggered by Trauma or some sort of violent shock. Don"t get Bomb-Happy here! It could also be triggered by Rape- but it would have to be violent in nature.

--actually its from damage to the hippocampus in your temporal lobe. what you are saying refers to a defense mechanism, not amnesia. if someone experiences something that traumatic your brain pushes those memories out of the way so you cannot recall them therefore easing your pain. they usually come up years later and that is also why people develop mental disorders. anyway, retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia results from damage to the hippocampus which is responsible for storing your memories. get your facts straight next time.

If you meant everything including your family members, friends, things most important to you, it's very unlikely possible without getting a severe brain damage physically done....

But to forget "most" things including what I've mentioned above, just be really, really depressed and block yourself from remembering anything you don't want to remember. It depends on how depressed you are and what you are willing to block from yourself, or you might get very, very lucky and just simply forget everything including things you don't want to forget... Repeat this process everyday till... Well, you won't remember what you are doing by then.....

As a note and warning, both methods are meant to "destroy" yourself, and both contain danger mentally and physically, or simply put, literally killing yourself and your personality/emotions... And there's the downside even if you succeeded and survived, that your forgotten memories/feelings may come back to haunt and torment you anytime all at once or gradually, with double or triple it's effects. You may not be able to bear them by then...

Even if you never regained forgotten memories, trust me, you can still feel them from time to time, the feelings of another you from previous time, in dreams or in wake, and it's not a pleasant feeling, and you may feel of the other you as a different person, separate from you, thus causing confusion of multiple personalities of the sort.

Well, at least that's what happened to me, and I fully disagreed with and hated the other past me for years and years after reading the notes and diaries I've left for myself, only now I began to learn to forgive. The depression never went away completely, and with my own life and tragedies as it is, the effects are just too hard on me that there had been many times I thought of committing suicide just to let it all go, to chase away those feelings. But I would have hated myself more if I did that, so no choice but to bear it and drag myself to move on. Perhaps I'll see the light at the end of the day, one day, or maybe not.....

Till this day, I'm not very familiar with my own body, separated from old friends, and felt the distance towards my own family as I can't recall them ever being mine. Though growing accustomed to them had been a good experience, I still wish that the old me will come back one day so that I may disappear along with my feelings and sufferings right now (this is due to losing a very important and helpful person who had helped me build myself after losing my memories 13 years ago when I was 21 years of age. Now at 34, I live in sorrow, regret and loneliness.) That was just wishful thinking... But my guess is if my memories and personalities ever returned to being my old self, the sufferings would be even greater, and I don't want to know and even imagine what I might do by then....

It's your choice, try to find your own happiness and try be happy along the way, happy with others and happy with yourself, choose my path and be doomed forever, or just commit suicide just like what you heard in the news, and be forever an ignorant fool that never knew what life still has in store for them...

Good luck in finding what you want and hoped for.

P.S. - Amnesia due to hypnosis never works properly the way you hoped it would, and it's quite temporary, or never will work at all. (I'm still in tears while writing this, so please forgive any errors if there's any)

Can you get amnesia by locking yourself in a room for 2 days without food or water?

It actually depends on what you do in the room. If you just sit there, or do other exercises and whatnot that doesn't harm yourself, then you can't get amnesia. If you bang your head against the wall, ram your head into a wall, or beat yourself over the head with a stick or other object, then you could possibly develop amnesia. Amnesia derives from damage to parts of the brain, which often is affecting the limbic system, which is the part of the brain that controls memory recall. Without food or water, you might just get dizzy, or faint, but not develop amnesia, since amnesia derives from damage to specific parts of the brain (the parts that control memory function).

This depends on the player of course, but many would probaly agree that Amnesia is scarier. First, the action of Dead space take a bit out of the horror, giving more of a thrill than fear, while amnesia deals with a sense of creepiness and hoplessness as you have no way of defending yourself.
