yes you would need a walking cast if you have a broken ankle (New person) Most likely. I just broke my ankle in two spots and had surgery to put two screws in. I had a soft cast for 3 weeks about and then a regular cast for 2 weeks and then I had a walking cast that I COULDN'T walk on for 2 weeks, and after that I got the OK to walk in my walking boot, for probably about three weeks. If you follow everything the doctor says, your process will be much faster and you won't mess up your surgery and have to have surgery again (I.e. Your screws come loose from walking too early and they need to open you again to tighten them)

Not really. You would be in a great deal of pain if your ankle was actually broken. You can walk on your ankle if it is sprained, and it will still hurt but some people are capable of withstanding that pain, others arent. In summary if your ankle is broken you will most likely not be able to walk on it. It would cause you too much pain and your ankle would give out beneath you. It needs to be set and placed in a cast to heal.

Depends on how bad the ankle fracture is. I have a boot on for a small crack and I can walk with the boot on although it hurts. I keep it raised as much as possible though. What I would like to know is if you can take the boot off when sleeping and can you take the boot off at all through the day and just let your leg breath a bit.

That depends on the injury and the cast. For some injuries a "walking cast" is used that will allow you to bear weight. Some injuries require non-weight bearing to heal and so a convention cast that would not tolerate walking is applied.

What type of cast would be used for a fractured metacarpal?

Dependes on the severity of the break. A break that shows definite abnormalities in the structure of the ankle should be treated with a hard cast. However, a minor break can be treated with an Aircast. (new person) it depends. With my ankle break I was in a soft cast after surgery then a hard cast. Then a walking boot I could not walk on and then I was allowed to walk on it.
