Where is a baby kept in the stomach?

In people, the part of the body called the abdomen is the section on our fronts that starts just below our chests and goes to just above where our legs start. We have many different organs and parts inside our abdomens such as the stomach, the liver, the bowel, and the uterus in females.

It can be confusing when people talk about a mother having a baby in her "tummy" because we sometimes use the words tummy and stomach when we really mean "abdomen". Our stomach is where we digest our food, it is where our food goes when we eat it. It is a space to hold the food inside our abdomen until it is digested. The stomach is not involved in making babies.

Another space inside our abdomen is the uterusthat we also call a womb. It is inside the uterus that the baby forms. The uterus is just below the navel (bellybutton) in the abdomen.

After the man's penis puts sperm inside the woman's uterus through her vagina, the sperm connects with an egg and that is when the baby starts to form in the uterus. It takes about nine months and then the baby is ready to come out. It comes back out from the uterus through the vagina to be born.

Babies do not actually grow inside a person's stomach. Rather, two people have sexual intercourse and a tiny egg inside the woman's uterus is fertilized. The baby grows for all nine months inside the uterus, until her water breaks and she gives birth.

In the womb the growing baby is attached to the mother by what is called an umbilical cord and placenta.
