When I ask people what it is that they fear most about speaking in front of a group, there is one answer I can count on: "Looking foolish, or being made fun of." And if I probe a little further - to discover the roots of this very specific fear - there is almost always one event or period of time that's responsible. For many it's Elementary or Junior High School, the time when most of us were called upon to make our first class presentation, frequently accompanied by giggles, strange looks and unkind words from our classmates. What is sad to ponder is that your class presentation may have been excellent! You may have appeared calm and well prepared, and yet an immature audience left you with a memory that has wandered the corridors of your mind all these years . . . and taken from you the desire to speak in public. But you have grown up. So, too, has your audience. They will not make faces or say unkind things.
