Yes. Historians now think he was Spanish. The theory is he took a different persona because his family were political rivals of the crown and the crown would never support his ideas. To back up this theory they point out he only spoke and wrote in Spanish and was married to a Spanish Nobel woman. A rough Italian sailor would never have been permitted to marry into a wealthy Spanish family in the 1400's. Who someone married was very important and political.

Yes and no.

Yes: He left on his first voyage to the "New World" in 1492 from Palos de la Frontera, a town located in southwestern Spain.

And no: His intention was to sail to Asia, but instead he landed in the Bahamas archipelago, at a locale he named San Salvador. And, there were people already living there that called their place Guanahani. America was not called America at the time, it was given that name after the Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci, which was at a later date. So, technically, there was no America at the time Columbus 'discovered' it. In fact, he never set foot on American soil, not on North or South mainlands, anyway.

And so the myth that Columbus discovered America is most likely false. He, instead, discovered the Caribbean Islands and Central America. It was the other explorers from other European countries that helped colonize the Americas in the years that followed.

Plus: Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas. About five centuries earlier a Norse expedition led by Leif Ericson established the short-lived colony of Vinland in what is now Newfoundland, which is on the North American continent, proper.

Also plus: The Bering land bridge is believed to have enabled human migration to the Americas from Asia about 20,000 years ago. So the people that Columbus encountered in 1492 had already 'discovered' it many thousands of years before he was even born.

So, yes: Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain to America. But no: That is not the whole story.
