The root of the word "Pompeii" is pompe which is an Oscan word meaning five. Pompeii had five villages at this location in the eighth century BC. Samnites had taken over Pompeii in 424 BC against the Oscans. With the Samnites and Romans still warring, the Roman Empire tried to expand its borders to include what is known as Pompeii in 343 BC in the Samnite Wars. It wasn't until after the Samnite Wars that Pompeii gave in to Roman rule from 290 BC.
