Why did Ben Franklin start inventing?

Ben was always an inventor, even as a child. I read one story where he invented a set of water wing things to fit on his feet because he wanted to cross a pond but not swim. He did it and they worked. He was always a reader and thinker. He had to hide books from his father and his father pulled him out of school at 8 years old. He was gifted.
