When Cortez conquered the Aztec empire, he brought more in the way of freedom to the subjects of the Aztecs than they had under the Aztecs. The conquered peoples no longer needed to provide their children for the daily sacrifices. Spanish law replaced arbitrary decisions of the judges. Spain replaced paganism with a form of Christianity. Spain taught better agricultural practices, ones better suited to mountainous conditions.
