Most of the people were surprised by the eruption and died. Only those few that left immediately, survived.

The Roman city of Pompeii was extremely close to the volcano called Mount Vesuvius. The volcano's eruption was strong and fierce and quickly engulfed Pompeii and a small town adjacent to it. Although some Romans certainly were able to escape, for the most part they were trapped in the hot lava flows that preserved their bodies and the homes they lived in. Excavators have discovered much of how this city lives and operated as the lava was such a preserving element.
Well that depends if they survived or not. If they survived they probably escaped in boats.
