How did people know when air raids were going to happen?

Before an air raid began two warnings were sounded - amber (yellow), then red alert. When it was safe to leave air raid shelters and walk about an 'all clear' signal was sounded.

They were alerted by the sound of the sirens, which are used nowadays as signals to tell factory-workers that their shift is finished.

EnglandEngland was attacked continously by German bombers since the summer of 1941. They created an organization of civilians who watched for bombers and could accurately spot their location and altitude and report it to a headquarters. This allowed early detection and warning so the cities could be warned to take shelter.

Even if this didn't work, they had developed a radar system that was installed along the coast of England. This consisted of towers that transmitted radar signals that could detect German bombers while they were still over France.

The population was warned of air raids by the sounding of a loud air raid siren to warn of the start of a raid and again at the end of the raid to indicate that all was no clear.

As soon as approaching enemy aircraft were detected by radar, air raid sirens were activated to warn people to take shelter. Some people had their own purpose built shelters at home and there were public shelters for people who were - for example - out shopping at the time. Factories and businesses usually had their own shelters for the use of staff. When the raid was over, the sirens sounded again (with a different tone) to signal 'all clear'
