A picture inspired sculptor Felix de Weldon to create the life size model. It was paid for by donations, later cast in bronze. In September 1954 it was brought to Washington, D. C. At the 179th anniversary of the US Marine Corps in 1954, it was dedicated by president Eisenhower.
The National World War 2 Memorial of the USA is located in Washington, DC. Many artists submitted their ideas for the memorial. Frederich St. Florian's design was chosen but altered somewhat to accommodate the site and additions wanted for the memorial. It took over 11 years to go from the time of government approval to the dedication of the monument. It is a very stunning monument.
