Yes, there are genealogy websites that provide information for free and I'll give you a few examples below. Also, check with your LDS Family History Center or public library. They may provide no-cost access to some subscription genealogy websites if you visit their facilities. www.familysearch.org www.rootsweb.com http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ The GenWeb sites (do a search for a county, state and "genweb") I suppose it depends on what you are researching and what you are trying to do. Are you just starting your research? It can make a difference if you are searching US 19th century, Ireland 18th century, American Indian, African American, and so on. At some point it may be beneficial if you were to subscribe to something like Ancestry.com ( http://ancestry.com/ ) -- they do have a free 14 day trial offer. You just have to weigh the cost of the subscription against the benefits of accessing certain databases online. Perhaps it's more economical, or efficient, right now than taking vacation and incurring the expenses of going to the US National Archives in Washington DC, or the LDS library in Salt Lake City, for example. There are free things available - for example searching the US Social Security Death Index ( http://www.cyndislist.com/socsec.htm ) or the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is a free genealogy and family history program ( http://www.familysearch.org ); as well as the sites mentioned in the previous answer. There are also volunteer projects that might be helpful to you. There re several referenced on the RootsWeb home page. Assuming you are conducting some US research, you may already know that there are regional US National Archives with free access, perhaps one is close to where you live. Also some public libraries have free access to genealogical materials. Depending on where and when you are researching, there may be a wealth of information freely available.

The largest free genealogy website in the United States is FamilySearch.org. As of October 2013, it has records covering about three billion people, and new records are being added daily. It's owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but you don't have to be a member of that church (or any church) to use it.
