An Entente is a kind of alliance that is an agreement not to attack each other. The Triple Entente was made up of France, Britain and Russia. The Entente Powers fought the Central Powers during World War I.

In 1907 Britain made a similar set of deals with Russia regarding influence in mainland Asia, bringing to an end years of cat and mouse over the approaches to India (the Great Game).

This tied the three of them together in a "Triple Entente" somewhere short of an alliance but much closer than the squabbling of the previous decades and arranged against Germany, Austria-Hungry and Turkey (and technically Italy but she had made a secret deal with France)
