What did lincoln do after the Battle of Bull Run?

Lincoln removed Irvin McDowell from command, replacing him with George B. McClellan. He would prove instrumental in the reorganizing of the Union Army into a competent, well-trained fighting force.

The Union defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run, forced President Lincoln to rethink the next moves he could take and recover from this, by him, an unexpected loss in an attempt to attack Richmond. Lincoln ordered a rapid intensification of the blockade, the training of Union forces under the command of General Butler in the area of Fort Monroe.

Believing that Maryland was not secure enough, and to make sure it did not have another chance to secede, he fortified Baltimore.

Lincoln also called for rebuilding the defeated forces of Bull Run, along with reinforcing the US arsenal at Harper's Ferry. He also wanted to reinforce the defenses of Washington DC.

Most of these ideas were sound, however, and he added other features to the army to stop the rebellion. The problem of the loss at Bull Run, however, led him to begin actions that were soon to blur into making himself the de facto "general in chief". Like Jefferson Davis, Lincoln began a very "hands on" approach to the war, and later this would cause problems of conflicting actions and duplicating other actions. The separation of political leaders and military ones is necessary to a very large extent.

With Lincoln and Davis reverting back to the era of Napoleon, where Napoleon was head of state and head of military operations would prove costly and extend the length of the war.
