Madam C. J. Walker--like Helena Rubinstein, Elizabeth Arden and Annie Malone--was a pioneer of the modern hair care industry and developed a line of hair care products for African American women during the early 20th century. She was not the first person to create hair care products; in fact hair care products have been used by women for thousands of years, but like Rubinstein, Arden and Malone she developed a national distribution system and trained thousands of women as sales agents who could become economically and financially independent. She was an innovator who used creative direct sales, training, advertising and promotion methods to distribute her products throughout the U. S., Central America and the Caribbean. In addition to her hair care business, she was well known for her philanthropy and her political activism.
