Madam C. J. Walker, who was born Sarah Breedlove in Delta, Lousiana, had very little formal education as a child because the local and state legislature refused to fund schools for black children because of the racism of the time. She may have learned some rudimentary literacy skills in her church. As she got older and as her daughter started school in St. Louis, she began to learn to read and write. The women of her church in St. Louis also helped. Eventually she attended night school. Then after she started her hair care business, she hired a personal tutor. Madam Walker grew up at a time when most Americans did not graduate from high school and when most girls received very little formal education.
