Pearl Harbor was important because it was the site at which Japanese naval action brought the US into World War 2. Despite Japanese efforts to ensure that war was declared 30 minutes in advance of the surprise attack, communications in Washington DC between diplomats were delayed and the attack came before war was declared. This enraged the US population and ensured a war to "unconditional surrender."

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor precipitated the United States entry into a state of war with the Empire of Japan. When Hitler learned that the United States had declared war on Japan he, Hitler, declared war on the United States.

What had been a war between Japan and China, and between Germany and England boiled over into a World War. Tha war saw the industrial might of the United States supplying England and eventually every belligerant lined up against Germany,Italy, and Japan.
It got the United States involved in World War 2

1. US entry into the war. 2. Forcing the US Navy to fight Japan with AIRCRAFT CARRIERS rather than with battleships. Had those obsolete battleships not been sunk at Pearl Harbor, the US Navy would have used them at the Battles of Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, etc. Battleships fighting aircraft carriers would have been defeated.
