What was the lasting impact of bacon's rebellion?

Bacon died of a "bloody flux" before he and Berkeley met in battle. His forces dissolved without his charismatic leadership, and the General Assembly quickly repealed most of the liberal laws it had passed.

Berkely's response was very harsh, hanging nearly two dozen men and seizing their estates to compensate his allies whose plantations had been plundered by Bacon's rebels.

The consequences of Bacon's Rebellion were far reaching. The rebellion involved, mostly, poor whites and African Americans (free and slave). some Native Americans and opened the eyes of the white male landowners to just how vulnerable they were to an uprising (a constant fear of landowners) they. However, if the poor were separated into classes giving whites a slightly elevated position over blacks and native Americans, an uprising of a coalition of poor whites, freedmen, slaves and native Americans would be prevented . The result was the codification of the slave laws in 1705 singling out a race as inferior and creating chattel slavery.
