The massive scientific research and engineering projects conducted in the United States, Germany, and Japan had a lasting effect on the way technological advancements are developed. The Manhattan Project was the most dramatic example, but throughout the war, basic scientific research played an increasing role in technological development. Also the introduction of the GI Bill accelerated the spread of college education in the American population, and from there through the rest of the world.
