Bear in mind that the vikings did NOT have horns on their helmets.

Otherwise, it was used in combat, if they were lucky enough to have a helmet. Metal was expensive. The most common viking weapon was the spear, since it was 95% wood, and made the person deadly. If someone had a sword, that person had money. A shield was common since it was mostly wood, helmets were the next common piece of equipment. Body armor? HA! Only the most wealthy could afford such a thing.

Actual Viking helmets did not have animal horns, as depicted beginning in 19th century Swedish mythic art. These types of horns are found on helmets used in Teutonic rituals.

The helmets were mostly hard leather with metal reinforcement, and hammered iron helmets for the chieftains.
Some samples of viking helmets have been located in graves and viking boats (ships)found buried. Those that were found did not have the stereotypical but incorrect two horns located on each side, as depicted by television during the 20th century. The helmets were made of metal, but only covered the top portion of a man's head, in some samples a metal nose guard extended down protecting the man's nose.

The helmets had been preserved by the mud (no oxygen could reach the metal); otherwise they would not have survived the centuries. Bronze, Copper, Brass, Gold or Silver helmets would survive any type of weather/elements; but normal Iron or Steel helmets would normally rust into nothing over time, unless protected from moisture and oxygen.
