The words to the Star Spangled Banner were written by Francis Scott Key after he watched the bombardment of Baltimore from a British ship. (He was on that ship as a US negotiator; he was not a POW as some accounts state.) The tune is an old English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven."
