Spain's Second Republic Government in 1936 had wildly oscillated between extreme conservatives and fascists who took on the title "Nationalists" and extreme leftists and communists who took on the title "Republicans". In 1936, when a new leftist came to power, the Nationalists, led by General Francisco Franco Bahamonde revolted against the new leadership and set out to install himself as the leader of a more conservative Spain. After three years, he was successful.
