Programmable digital computers have been built with many other technologies: e.g. electromechanical (too slow), fluidics (not sensitive to radiation, good in nuclear reactors, etc. but bulky), optical (only in research so far), etc. Optical programmable digital computer are very likely to replace most modern electronic computers in the near future, assuming the problems the research labs are having are solved.
