France Surrendered because they wanted to save the Eiffel Tower!
It really was not France that surrendered it was the leader of the French who surrendered. The French were furious with him and at the end of the war they tried him in a court for doing what he did. The French wanted to drive the Germans out of their country. During the war they had an exceptionally strong Underground Resistance and the Free French in Britain helped to win WWII.

France was bitterly divided, and Germany had better troops. Another reason is that Britain had to evacuate their army from France. France from the start had a weak military; although Charles de Gaulle warned of the weakness of the French military, the government did nothing. France did not have the support of the French people after the declaration of war. All of France's allies (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, Denmark, and Norway) besides Britain were all defeated by the time of the defeat of France.

There are a few reasons why France was afraid of Germany:

1.) Germany declared war on them.

2.) Gemany was VERY powerful. When trying to pass Belgium to get to France(a supposedly neutral country), they attacked Belgium and defeated them in a matter of days.

In the end when the Central Powers collapsed(Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, etc.), France wanted revenge on Germany along with a few other countries.

Hope that helped you! :D
