The Spanish were initially considered messengers from the Incan gods, and impressed the natives. However, Atahualpa, the Incan ruler, had as many as 80,000 warriors to the Spanish 200, and refused to relinquish his throne. Unfortunately, his men were no match for the superior arms of the conquistadors and Atahualpa was captured in the Battle of Cajamarca (November 16, 1532). Most of his hierarchy were killed, and as many as 6000 warriors. Although his people paid his ransom in gold and silver, Pizarro had him executed anyway. When the city of Cuzco was taken in 1533, the Spanish rule of the Incan civilization was established.
