Gassing turned out to be the easiest way to kill large numbers of victims quickly. Previously, they had relied on mass, open-air shootings, which took longer and sometimes made the killers vomit.
Because, It was more effective and cheaper than just shooting them dead and the shootings did cause some SS officers to go mad and commit suicide.
Gas chambers were used as an efficient way to kill lots of prisoners at once.
Before that, they machine-gunned the victims, but the Nazis wanted 'industrial, assembly-line' efficiency.
