Why are people against the iraq war?

Originally the idea was to get rid of Saddam Hussein. Unfotunately, a whole lot different factions, mainly different versions of Muslims, tried to fill the space when he was gone and there's been a war ever since. The war is the battle for trying to stabilise the country and stop the continual insurgency and bombings.

Saddam had several mandates that were given by the United Nations. Clinton called him a definitive and direct threat prior to George Bush taking office.

Saddam was known to have killed thousands of Kurds inside Iraq with WMD's. Saddam claimed to have weapons of mass destruction for years. He often bragged about them and his ability to deliver them.

Saddam over the entire Clinton administration refused thousands of inspections of weapons sites. He thumbed his nose at inspectors, kicked them out and did other stupid acts against the U.N.

The lack of any response from the United Nations made them look extremely weak. Several resolutions were passed to allow pressure to increase on Saddam. Had he allowed inspections, it is very possible (probable) that we would not be there today and Saddam would be in power.

Yes, some extreme leftys wanted to use the same force we used in Cuba (sanctions) and have the same useless affect it had there. Realists would immediately realize that this would be useless.

Clinton and Bush were both realists. Clinton promised attacks if the mandates were not followed through with. Bush moved forward with the Clinton standing policy. It was Clintons administration that inserted inspectors and promised the use of force. Once promised only fools would not follow through.

The United States currently has over 400 years of oil available in the Green Valley reserve alone. Oil would be a silly issue. Saving millions of Kurds and allowing freedom within their country makes far more sense.

and basically, the extremist war mongering conservatives are the reason why we all are in Iraq killing innocent people. when we really should get OUT the country.

It is not always morally wrong. Like most actions, the bad that an act causes must be balanced against the good it provides. In the case of war, as it can cause untold horrors, the good it provides must be great for the war to be justified.

A quote from John Stuart Mills:

"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth fighting for is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares about more than his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. "

Now, the bar has to be set very high for a war to be morally justifiable. The vast majority of wars in history certainly can't make this standard. But to make a blanket statement that war is wrong makes a black-and-white issue out of one that is inherently gray.

Here are some things to consider about the moral justification for a war:

1. Who is being protected from what?
2. Were there other possible ways of resolving the conflict, AND which caused less suffering?
3. What is hoped to be gained from fighting?
4. If fighting were NOT to take place, what would be lost?

People who opposed the Iraq War argued that Iraq did not pose an immediate or serious threat to the United States, and that there was little or no justification for the war. The war began in 2003.

Because it was started under false pretences and has turned Iraq into a much worse mess than it was before the war, there is no doubt that Saddam was a horrible nasty leader, but were he still in power it is highly unlikely that Iraq today would be in the mess it is in after 5 years of American occupation. North Korea has a leader that is worse to it's people than Saddam was.

The Second American Gulf War was predicated upon two major lies, the first being that Saddam was complicit in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and second that he was attempting to develop weapons of mass destruction. So the pretext for the US war against Iraq was founded upon falsehoods.

Second, Iraq had not engaged in any action justifying such a military response. Had Iraq actually attacked someone, or give aid and succor to international terrorists, there would have been sufficient cause to attack them. Had they even failed to comply with international demands UN inspectors be granted access to their country, THAT could have justified invasion. No such justifications exist.
