Robert E. Lee was a Confederate Lt. General. He won a number of important battles in the Civil War and worked out a number of important techniques. Only when General Grant took over the Union Army did he face a general of equal brilliance.

Robert E Lee was widely regarded as the most capable and respected general in the United States Army before the war. He had enjoyed a long and highly successful military career, and should have been anticipating retirement when the war broke out. His decision to join with the Confederacy was a blow to President Lincoln, who thought he might be pursuaded to lead the Union forces. Lee proved a strategic genius over the next few years and was (and remains) a hero in the southern states. His army showed courage and resilience under his leadership, even when it should have been collapsing due to limited equipment, supplies, and manpower. Lee's success may have been unfortunate in some ways because his refusal to surrender (until defeated in April, 1865) kept the south fighting long after its defeat was clear.
