Santa Claus is in one sense a derivative of the historical St. Nicholas ( it should be noted his feast- Dec 06, is not strictly speaking in ADVENT let alone Christmas season-theologically- Advent commences Dec 08. The Swiss ( Klaujagen) is a big celebration that honors St. Nick, but has nothing to do with either the American concept of Santa Claus, or even Christmas season. Clausism- and it is a belief system- was given a shot in the arm by the Newspaper editor Frank Church with his Yes, Virginia. The arguments given in defense of Santa Claus in the article are childish and vague. It is interesting the real fulcrum of the holiday- the Birth of Christ- is not even alluded to in the article. In emphatic rah-rah fashion, Santa Claus is mentioned in every paragraph, God is only mentioned once int he sense ( Thank God He ( Santa) lives and lives forever!) more than a little unbalanced. why not just tell kids the truth- as a symbolic sort of M.C. - well like cupid for Valentine"s day- I might have some tolerance for Clausism, but the big time Propaganda mill such as the film( Polar Express) pushes the Johnson Bar too far!

No one made up Santa. Santa originated from a real saint, Saint Nicholas, who would bring gifts to the poor. Santa Claus just evolved out of Saint Nicholas.
