The Articles of Confederation created a government that had only one branch of government. It was the Legislative Branch.
It is called the Balance of Power, designed to place checks and balance on each branch of government.

True. Since the vice president is the second highest official in the executive branch of government and the Senate is part of the legislative branch, this is one way in which the two branches are drawn closer.
It is not a branch, but the theory that if power is divided between 3 branches of government that each will check the other and no one branch will get too powerful.
